The Best (and Worst) Times to Pump Your Septic Tank
Getting your home’s septic pumped should take place every 2-3 years to maintain proper system operation—or you’ll have a bigger mess on your hands! That’s not all, though. Did you know that the time of year also matters? Here’s your handy reference guide to septic service seasonality.
Early autumn is considered a pretty good time to schedule your septic pumping if the tank is near full and won’t make it through the winter, especially if you expect several visitors for the holiday season. Between Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Hanukkah, and other holidays, your tank can fill up a lot more quickly than you think! That’s why we encourage emptying your septic to prepare for your bustling celebrations.
Winter is really the only season we don’t recommend pumping septic systems. Unfortunately, frozen ground, heavy snow, and slippery ice can make it extremely difficult for even our skilled technicians to properly dig up and securely cover the septic tank. And we would never want to provide our valued customers anything less than exceptional service every time! That’s why you’re better off avoiding scheduling a service during this tricky season.
Not surprisingly, spring is the most popular season for septic tank pumping. The ground is finally thawed, and many homeowners want the service completed before the beautiful summer months. We also suggest springtime because the excessive rainfall and snowmelt can cause your septic to work harder than usual and emptying the tank will help with the drainage and water level.
Pro tip: Time flies! Don’t let the years slip by—make a note in your calendar when your septic will be due and schedule in advance (especially if you plan to pump during the busiest septic season of spring!).
Summer is also an adequate option, if necessary. While it’s not the most popular season, it’s still perfectly possible for us to perform a routine pumping during those warmer months. If your tank isn’t quite full by spring, but can’t wait until fall, then just give us a call and we can come by empty it.
